The Cathedral Basilica

     The Ruggeriano temple of 1094, had been prospected to be an Episcopalian church and was reconstructed in 1607-1642. The construction divided the church into three aisles from 12 enormous columns of granite.
     A dome was added a century later. The prospectus that gives the Mons, Antonio Franco Plaza is embellished by a magnificent marmoreal portal.
     Solemn and vast, the Renaissance Style, guards numerous and precious works of art such as: the marmoreal statue of the "Patrona Santa Lucia", a large painting (24mqs) of "Assumption" which occupies the whole leading wall of the apse (1771), the cloth of S. Blaise by P. Novelli (1645), the oil?painting on wood of "S. Mark, the statue in rosy alabaster of "Ecce Horno", the baptismal source (1485), the cloth of Immaculate Lady" (1676), the sculptures of the Chapel of the Sacrement (1773?1854) embellished from the statue of "The Last Supper" the wooden Crucifix (1665).
     The valuable choir is carved from walnut tree and the splendid closets of the sacristy of the 18th.century align with the rest of artwork of gold and silver embroidered hangings.
     Among the treasured objects of the Cathedral is the "silvery hand" with the relic of Santa Lucia by Francis Bruno, one of the most famous argentieris of Messina in the 6th century.
