The Economy

The economy of the town is based on the farming, on the sheep ? rearing (one very flaurishing) and on the handicraft. The famous wine "Mamertino", already known since, time of Romans is produced in Santa Lucia del Mela. Nowadays the "Mamertino" is produced in modest quantity by the agricoltural firm "Azienda Agricola VASARI" and it is exported in Europe and Japan. This wine, velvet and delicate taste, is produced by an accurate selection of grepes, applying the method of biological growing regulating by the "Europe au Community". The Mamertino", can be appreciated as a biological product and it has ben included amoug tupical wines of Sicily. Considerable is also the production of honey. Still today , you can find very genuine cheese. The handicraft can boast of an ancient wood work and a consolidated tradition in the working of iron and marble. Even the sweet ? producing industry has clever, and competent confectioners. Who doesen't know the delicions nougatf. Famous restaurans, where you can taste the tipical dishes of the local gastronomy, are frequented by the founds of good cooking. In Santa Lucia del Mela has not disappeared the working of leather so it isn't difficult to find sundry utensis cawed finely. Clever goldsmiths and engraves perpetuate, by their art and this intelligence a flaurishing activity in Messina and province. In some winding lane of the charming historical centre you can meet the last worker of the copper and admire bus work in a dark work shop where the time seems to be stopped.
